Another dream, or perhaps a memory, followed by a series of moments relived. Gabrielle was there, alongside him, sometimes in dress, sometimes in armor. Delightfully she rode alongside him on horseback, and sometimes with him on the same mount. Gracefully she would dance with him during noble festivities. She would stand with him, side by side, happily as a lady in court, and proudly as a warrior in battle. More importantly, she would confide to him her secrets, and her feelings.

With swords and shields, they clashed and blocked, both becoming so well-practiced in their training form, until she was disarmed of her blade and blocker, and gently knocked down by his suppressed strength.

“Good work, Gabrielle,” Attrebus praised. “You’ve gotten better.”

“You trained me well,” she added, panting while she sat on the ground. “My father taught me how to fight, but it was you who taught me how to improve myself, though I’m still nowhere near as strong or as skilled as you.”

“You don’t have to be as strong as me. Skill is most important when handling a sword,” he explained as he extended his hand to help her up. “Strength is only important for both the heart and the mind.”

She took his hand and was back on her feet. “How do I know when my heart and mind are strong?”

“When you learn you are not strong, even when you are.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Well, for starters, you wouldn’t be so angry,” he teased.

She smiled as she embraced him, her arms around his neck. “I’ll only allow you to test my limits,” she whispered, their lips only a kiss away.

Whether this was a dream or a memory, it didn’t matter, for it was still a good one. Inevitably, Attrebus awoke back to the present, by the very hands of the woman he had only just dreamed of who was tugging and pushing him to wake up, only to discover that the reality he returned to was harsher than he last saw it.

“Finally, your awake,” she spoke in relief.

“Gabrielle?” he spoke her name, still waking up. “What’s going on? Where are we?”

“A castle dungeon,” answered the voice of a man.

So it was. Rather than awakening to the warm sun above the trees of the island, instead he was awakened in the solid darkness of a dungeon. He was far below ground, no doubt in the pits below the castle; yet for some reason a shaft had been constructed from somewhere above. Outside, the sun had risen to a point where its light slanted dimly down the shaft.

Before the bars was a middle-aged Griko, brown haired with matching beard, cladded in steel and iron. “Sorry for the inconvenience, but our queen had ordered us to bring you in immediately without you even trying to resist, before you go any further.”

Attrebus recognized him. “Now I remember! We overslept, and came out of our tent to find that you and your men were there looking for us! You threw some kind of knockout gas!”

“I am the Captain of the Guard.
